Prefinished flooring has a finished thickness of approximately 14mm. It's made up
of a number of layers, the uppermost being a veneer of hardwood timber of approximately
3.5 - 4mm thick, adhered to plywood over a stabilising base layer and pre-coated
with usually 5 coats of acrylic polyurethane.
Because prefinished flooring is pre-coated, the installation process is much shorter
with a typical 30m2 floor able to be fully installed in a day.
Prefinished flooring is available in a wide range of different timbers, colours
and styles. Prefinished is available in 3 strip, 2 strip and plank, 3 strip being
least expensive, 2 strip mid-range and plank most expensive.
Prefinished floors are preferred for:
- low traffic areas where the floor is less likely to be heavily worn or damaged (eg:
kitchens in townhouses & apartments)
- places where the inconvenience of mess and down-time is unacceptable (eg: restaurants
& existing homes)
- areas which will be refurbished, redecorated within a few years and the flooring
will be replaced (eg: boutique shops)
- quickly improving the look or value of a property for resale or other
Prefinished floors can be glued down or are often installed as a floated floor over
a heavy plastic layer (as a moisture barrier) and either 2mm foam or 4mm acoustic
underlay. They can also be installed over an acoustic layer or over underfloor heating
(as a floated floor).
Prefinished floors are able to be disced or sanded and recoated to remove minor
damage and generally up to 2 sands are achievable out of a 3.5mm veneer.
