Laminate flooring is a hard surface floor covering which normally consists of more
than 90% wood. An abrasion-resistant wear layer and a decorative layer which
gives the floor its look and pressed onto a coreboard made of wood-based materials.
Laminate floors commonly are between 7 - 8.5mm total thickness and are floated rather
than glued down. A variety of different foam and acoustic underlays are available
depending on the location it is being installed to.
Laminate floors are highly durable as they use a highly scratch and dent resistant
surface as opposed to polyurethane. Normally at the cheaper end of the market
they are designed to be installed by the home handy man relatively simply.
Should a laminate floor be damaged they are not able to be resanded and normally
cannot be repaired, sometimes it is possible to replace a damaged board.
